Josh Taylor has his first fight at welterweight, taking on Ekow Essuman, as boxing insiders gave their predictions.
Taylor came up to welterweight after two losses at 140. Defeats to Teofimo Lopez and Jack Catterall stalled the momentum of the former Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion. His last victory took place against Jack Catterall via a split decision in a fight that many had him losing. Taylor still has aspirations of becoming a two-time world champion, while a Catterall trilogy could also take place.
Essuman has a 21-1-0 record. His last fight was a victory against Ben Vaughan via a majority decision. Eussuman is targeting a world title shot, knowing a win over Taylor takes him closer to that. Here is how boxing insiders saw the fight playing out.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the new version of Josh Taylor, the welterweight version. Light-welterweight was just hard for him, but I imagine we’re going to see a rejuvenated Josh Taylor and I’m excited about it. “It’s a really under-the-radar dangerous fight because Ekow is maybe not the biggest name in the world, but he’s a really good fighter, strong as a bull, fit as a fiddle.
“Ekow ‘The Engine’ is his nickname and he’ll be there all night and he’ll be trying all night. Josh will be in a fight and I think we’ll find out how much Josh actually has left in this game after the performance. I fancy Josh to win it, I think he’ll look good winning it as well but no doubt Ekow will cause him a few problems,” Carl Frampton stated
“Josh’s journey is well chronicled. He has suffered misfortune in his last couple of fights, but he is Scotland’s Undisputed King, and nobody can ever take that away from him. However, Josh and ourselves are convinced that he has plenty more to give and that his welterweight voyage will come to a successful conclusion,” Frank Warren revealed
“He’s a southpaw. I’m going to pick him on points, because I think he’s very clever. He’s going to engage when Ekow boxes, and box when Ekow fights. I just think Josh Taylor has got to pull out all the stops. I think Josh is good enough to show that he can do it at welterweight and have a couple of big fights before he hangs up the gloves. If he hasn’t got it, I think it’s the last of him,” Gareth A. Davies stated
