Keaton Wagler delivers historic performance in No. 11 Illinois road win at No. 4 Purdue

Illinois freshman guard Keaton Wagler had a game for the ages in Saturday's 88-82 win at No. 4 Purdue Boilermakers (17-3, 7-2 in Big Ten).

The 6-foot-6 guard scored the most points ever by a visitor at Mackey Arena, finishing with 46 points on 13-of-17 shooting, including 9-of-11 from beyond the arc. Per ESPN, it's the most points in a road win over an Associated Press top-10 opponent in the poll's history.

Wagler was hot throughout, hitting threes on four consecutive trips down the court early in the first half, and making all three of his three-point attempts over the final 20 minutes, when he scored 22 points.

No. 11 Illinois (17-3, 8-1 in Big Ten) needed every ounce of Wagler's historic performance. The rest of the team shot 14-of-39 (35.9 percent) while making just 33.3 percent of their attempts from deep.

Massive Keaton Wagler game propels Illinois to road win at Purdue

Illinois asserted itself as one of the top teams in the Big Ten, arguably the strongest conference this season, with Saturday's victory. Per ESPN men's college basketball bracketologist Joe Lunardi, the Big Ten leads in projected NCAA tournament bids with 10.

The Illini were a No. 3 seed in his most recent update (Friday, Jan. 23), but they have room to move up with more statement wins over the remainder of the regular season. Illinois has five Quad 1 games left, including road games against No. 7 Nebraska (20-0, 9-0 in Big Ten) and No. 10 Michigan State (18-2, 8-1 in Big Ten) and a home game against No. 3 Michigan (18-1, 8-1 in Big Ten).

Wagler's huge game bodes well for the team's immediate future without senior guard Kylan Boswell, who will be out until February with a fractured right hand. The sensational freshman is capable of shouldering the brunt of the offensive load in Boswell's absence.

Wagler put himself on the map with his explosive display against Purdue. The rest of the Big Ten is officially on notice.
