The USC Trojans’ 2026 recruiting class took a major step forward with one name now etched at the top of the national leaderboard.
USC’s defensive centerpiece Luke Wafle has officially earned the No. 1 overall prospect ranking in Rivals’ final 2026 Rivals300, capping off a dominant prep career and elevating the Trojans' standing.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound edge rusher from New Jersey’s Hun School posted staggering production as a senior, finishing with 99 total tackles, 37 of them for loss, and a school-record 23 sacks, per On3's Steve Wiltfong.
That output came on the heels of a junior year where he notched 53 tackles, 18 TFL and eight sacks. Wafle was also named Rivals' MVP of the Navy All-American Bowl.
Wafle's rise was backed by Rivals’ Director of Scouting Charles Power, who said Wafle stood out with “elite size, athleticism, play strength, and on-field performance,” and called him “the most ready-to-play top EDGE prospect in the 2026 cycle.”
Power emphasized Wafle’s readiness to contribute immediately at the college level and projected a high ceiling for him, hinting at a pro career down the line.
“He dominated the week of practice and game at the Navy All-American Bowl and was the clear top player over the course of the week,” Power wrote. “Wafle brings a level of readymade ability to USC that should have him set to make an impact as a true freshman. He’s both a high floor and high ceiling prospect who looks like the safest bet to be a high draft pick in the 2026 cycle.”

The Trojans, led by Lincoln Riley, made Wafle a priority in their top-ranked 2026 class. After committing in June, Wafle stayed put and never flipped his decision.
Wafle joins the No. 1 class in the nation, as USC landed two five-star players, 20 four-star recruits, and 13 more three-star high school performers throughout the 2026 cycle.
“I’m honored to be named the No. 1 player by Rivals,” Wafle said. “Individual recognition is deeply meaningful and humbling, but for me, it’s all about the team and the guys in the locker room. I’m so excited to now be at USC with my new teammates and coaches. We’re going to do something special here.”
Given his profile and high valuation, Wafle should be expected to be a contributor at USC as a true freshman starting next season.
