The FIA has issued penalties to Aston Martin after both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll failed to attend Friday’s mandatory Fan Engagement activity at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The stewards confirmed that the team breached Article 19.2(c) of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, which requires drivers to participate in scheduled fan-facing activities during race weekends.
According to the report submitted by the FIA, many fans waited for hours in high temperatures to meet the drivers at the Fan Engagement zone.
Aston Martin representatives stated that Alonso and Stroll were informed they did not need to attend the event because they were not scheduled to drive in FP1, as the rookie drivers would take part in the Fan Engagement session on their behalf.

The stewards rejected this interpretation, reinforcing that Fan Engagement obligations apply regardless of FP1 driving status.
As a result, Aston Martin has been fined €25,000 for each driver. For both Alonso and Stroll, €15,000 of the fine will remain suspended for 12 months, provided no further breaches of Article 19 occur during the period.
The stewards also highlighted that failure to attend the event deprived fans of direct interaction with the team and its drivers, an integral part of modern F1’s commitment to fan accessibility. Because of this, a significant financial penalty was deemed necessary.
However, a substantial portion of the punishment was suspended after Aston Martin proposed corrective action. The team committed to:

The stewards accepted this proposal and confirmed that action will be monitored via a report from the team.
The decision comes during a high-pressure finale weekend, where fan involvement and scrutiny are heightened. Although Aston Martin avoided the full immediate penalty, the suspended component now places an added responsibility on the team to comply with fan-focused regulations for the next 12 months.
