Mercedes’ young prodigy Kimi Antonelli made Formula 1 history on Saturday at the 2025 Brazilian Grand Prix. He became the third-youngest driver ever to start from the front row after qualifying an impressive P2 at Interlagos.
At just 19 years, 2 months, and 15 days old, Antonelli joined an elite list of teenage talents who have stunned the sport with their rapid rise.
Only Lance Stroll (18 years, 10 months, and 5 days) and Max Verstappen (18 years, 10 months, and 29 days) were younger when they started on the front row.
While Stroll’s front-row start at Monza in 2017 came after post-qualifying grid penalties to other drivers, the Mercedes rookie driver's achievement in Brazil came purely on merit, underlining the teenager’s extraordinary pace and composure under pressure.
The Mercedes rookie, who has been widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in motorsport, delivered a flawless Qualifying session to line up alongside Lando Norris for Sunday's Grand Prix race, in what he called a "very difficult session".
Speaking to the media after the Qualifying session, Antonelli stated, "I’ve been enjoying a lot driving around this track, definitely also the crowd has given me some extra motivation, some extra energy, so I’m really looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully we can finish the weekend on a high."
Antonelli has already made waves since his first outing, becoming the third-youngest driver in history to start a Formula 1 race at 18 years and 202 days earlier this year.
Alongside his impressive second-place finish in Saturday’s Sprint race, the Italian rising star also claimed his first Formula 1 podium earlier this season at the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing third behind Max Verstappen, with teammate George Russell taking the victory.
Currently sitting seventh in the Drivers’ Standings, the 19-year-old has competed in 20 Grands Prix, scoring 104 points, and has finished inside the Top 10 in 11 races before heading into the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix.
As for the sprint performance, Antonelli has earned 12 points, with one pole position and one podium finish, with just one Sprint event remaining at the Qatar Grand Prix.
His progress through Mercedes’ junior program has been closely followed by fans and analysts alike, with many seeing him as a future world champion in the making.
As the youngest driver on the 2025 grid, Antonelli continues to defy expectations, balancing maturity beyond his years with raw speed and instinct.
The 19-year-old's front-row start at Interlagos marks not just a personal milestone but a glimpse into Formula 1’s future, one where the next generation is already beginning to make its mark.
