Bryson DeChambeau called it ‘invigorating.’ The LIV Golf tour’s debut in South Africa was met with a historic reception from the local crowd. That energy appeared to fuel his performance at The Club at Steyn City.

“No, I really appreciate it. I knew Louis was going to get so much love today, and it’s what I wanted to be a part of, so I was lucky to get to experience that. When they were chanting on the first hole and hearing that, it was invigorating,” said DeChambeau, who appreciated the South African supporters who were so enthusiastic about his group.

The crowd’s high energy was a clear factor in the Crushers’ GC captain’s performance, as the event reportedly sold over 90,000 tickets. And it’s a big deal, considering LIV Adelaide set the attendance record last year with 115,000 fans in attendance.

While playing next to fan favorite Louis Oosthuizen, DeChambeau said it was something he really wanted to be part of. He acknowledged the fans, saying, “They are a wild bunch but a good bunch.”

Given the recent rains that made conditions difficult, DeChambeau took it in stride. DeChambeau is currently tied first individually with his partner Charles Howell III at 8-under par. They are marginally ahead of Branden Grace, who has a 7-under 64.

For now, let’s take a look at how the event has shaped up so far.

The Home Team is Going Strong

Crushers may lead individual scoring, but the Southern Guards hold the top spot on the team leaderboard with a score of 18-under par. The team is fully comprised of South African players: Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, and Dean Burmester.

The Southern Guards have harnessed the power of their immense home crowd, and as a result, they collectively scored 10-under on their last nine holes. They lead Smash GC by a narrow 1-shot margin.

With the Southern Guards coming on strong and DeChambeau getting the wedges ready for Augusta, the scene is well set for an epic weekend at Steyn City. The Crushers will try to ensure the locals have little to cheer about.
