Dean Burmester did not dress like a typical golfer in Johannesburg, and people picked up on it straight away.

The Bafana Bafana shirt is the jersey of South Africa’s national football team, and it carries weight. It’s not something you expect to see on a golf course, especially at LIV Golf’s first stop in Africa. But for Burmester, it made sense.

The Stinger GC player also hit a great shot at the Lion’s Den on March 20, and LIV Golf’s official account shared the moment on X.

“OH BURMY,” the tour posted. “Hits a beauty on the Lion’s Den while wearing the Bafana Bafana shirt.”

Burmester spoke openly about his emotions after scoring a 67. “It’s probably the pinnacle of my career, honestly,” he said.

“This is probably the greatest day I’ve had on the golf course, the most fun, the most support I’ve ever had. I’ve played all over the world, and I’ve never felt this kind of emotion and this electricity.”

He was not the only one who felt it, as Steyn City was special for the South African players, and the crowd backed them throughout.

LIV Golf’s First African Event Is Bigger Than One Tournament

That reaction did not come out of nowhere. LIV Golf had never staged an event on African soil before, and Johannesburg treated it like more than just another stop. The turnout matched the occasion, and the noise followed the South African players from the first tee.

The players picked up on that immediately. Schwartzel, who has competed in multiple Presidents Cup events and played in front of world leaders, said nothing in his career had felt quite like Thursday morning at Steyn City.

“That first tee gave me goosebumps,” he said after his round of 66. “I almost had tears in my eyes. It was a really proud moment.”

Grace was just as direct after shooting 64. “I feel South Africa has been hungry for a big golf event like this and this experience,” he said.

In that setting, Burmester’s choice stood out even more. Wearing the Bafana Bafana shirt, he scored a 67, while South African players featured prominently in the team standings.

For one day in Johannesburg, it delivered, and the players knew this was not just another event.
