There will never be another John Daly.
That’s what we thought when the hard-hitting golf revolutionary was overpowering the fairways of the PGA Tour. He brought a unique, laid-back approach to golf, while ushering in the next generation of long hitters like Bryson DeChambeau.
But now his son, John Daly II, is on the scene, and he made an impressive PGA Tour debut a fortnight ago in Puerto Rico. Daly II took the tournament lead at the Puerto Rico Open on Saturday before fading on Sunday.
Perhaps ‘fading’ is the wrong description, because he showed that, just like his father, he is prone to occasional implosions. He had five bogeys on the back nine to fall to T37.
It was still a brilliant showing from the 22-year-old amateur, and his father shared his thoughts on his showing in Puerto Rico.
Daly II showed flashes of his father’s ability in Puerto Rico after threatening to win the event. Now, he returns to his college team, the Arkansas Razorbacks, who are challenging for the National title this season.
Daly, who is playing on the PGA Tour Champions, was asked about his son’s performance on their social media channels, and he said, “Oh, it was awesome, I mean, he led the tournament for six holes there on Saturday and he kept it going. He just had a bad back nine, his last nine. But he’s been playing great.
“Finished fourth last week. The Arks won in Houston, so they got a really good golf team, and you saw in the interview that he’s done, they’re asking him, ‘What are you going to do?’ and he said, ‘I’m going to stick to this golf team, because I think we’re pretty good.’ And they are.
“If he plays good the next two events and the Arks keep winning, they’ve got a really good shot of winning the Nationals.”
Daly II could not have been more complimentary of his Razorbacks side after his tournament in Puerto Rico, and he’s having a phenomenal year with them.
The Arkansas Razorbacks and John Daly II are having a standout year in 2026. The Hogs are currently ranked fourth in the nation and are coming off some of their most dominant performances in over a decade.
On March 17, Arkansas won the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston by a massive 12 strokes. This was their third team win of the 2025-26 season, the most they’ve had in a single year since 2011-12. Remarkably, they have finished in the top four in all seven events they have played this season.
While Daly is the big name, the team is led by a deep roster including Erich Fortlage and Thomas Curry, both of whom are also ranked in the national top 100.
Daly II is currently a senior and has evolved into a highly reliable anchor for the Razorbacks. He just finished tied for fourth at the All-American Intercollegiate, marking his third top-five finish of the season.
He is currently ranked 63rd individually in the NCAA and 28th in the PGA Tour University rankings, which tracks the best seniors in college golf. His biggest collegiate moment this year was winning the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in the fall, which earned him SEC Golfer of the Week honours.
Now, the Razorbacks are entering the championship phase of their schedule, and given their #4 ranking, they are currently heavy favourites to make a deep run into the match-play portion of the NCAA Championships.
