Rose Zhang is balancing professional golf with her final academic duties at Stanford.
The Stanford student is a participant at the 2026 Fortinet Founders Cup, currently taking place at Sharon Heights, near the Stanford campus.
While at the tournament, Zhang noted the completion of a 15-page final paper. “The paper is done, so… I feel like it became 15 pages, including references and images, so yeah, it was a long one,” she said.
This came just days after Zhang admitted she had yet to begin the assignment, despite a tight deadline during tournament week. “I actually don’t have finals, but I do have a 10-page paper which is due Thursday that I haven’t started,” she said at the pre-tournament press conference.
The assignment was unusual. It was about beer brewing in an archaeology class that looked at early civilizations and the history of alcohol.
Zhang worked on mashing and grinding materials and also studied yeast and molds under a microscope.
Even with little time, she followed her usual method and built the paper step by step instead of going back to edit later. “I like to create as I go… if I created the introduction, that is done,” she said, explaining how she managed to complete the assignment alongside her tournament schedule.
Finishing the paper clears one of her last academic tasks and brings her closer to the end of her time at Stanford set for June.
It wasn’t easy. Classes, tournaments, sponsor stuff, practice, everything at once. She had to keep figuring out how much she could actually handle.
“I had to figure out what my boundaries were and what worked best with having such a demanding timetable,” she said.
Now that split is starting to fade. She’s still around Stanford, still practicing with the team, still doing her AJGA event, but it’s shifting. More of her focus is going into playing.
After the first round, she’s tied for 40th at Sharon Heights. The rest of the week will say a bit more about where she’s at.
