When TGL presented by SoFi returns on December 28, the innovative indoor golf league will debut a series of enhancements designed to amplify the drama that made its inaugural season a success. From an expanded putting surface to wild new hole designs, Season 2 promises to build on the foundation laid during a first year that saw Atlanta Drive GC claim the championship.
The league’s second campaign kicks off with a Finals rematch between defending champions Atlanta Drive and New York Golf Club, airing on ABC at 3 p.m. ET. It marks TGL’s broadcast network debut and sets the stage for 15 regular season matches before the playoffs begin in March.
The most significant physical change to SoFi Center involves the GreenZone, the short-game complex where players chip, pitch, and putt in front of a live audience. The putting surface has grown by 38%, now spanning 5,270 square feet, roughly the size of an average PGA Tour green.
This expansion allows for 12 different pin locations, up from seven in Season 1. The additional variety should create more strategic decisions and prevent teams from becoming too familiar with specific putts. The undulations have been softened slightly to create more natural slopes while improving sightlines for fans seated around the green.
The bunkers surrounding the putting surface also received attention. One bunker was removed entirely, while the remaining two expanded by 50%. Revetted layers of turf now create distinct vertical walls on the bunker faces, adding visual drama and increasing the difficulty of greenside recovery shots.
Beyond the green itself, the hitting boxes where players strike shots into the 64-foot-wide screen have been enlarged. The sand trays can now be lowered and feature larger bunker lips, making fairway bunker shots more challenging and realistic.
TGL’s hole designs generated significant buzz during Season 1, particularly those created by architect Agustin Pizá. His unconventional approach, which includes features like active volcanoes and 250-foot rock formations, returns with new creations for Season 2.
Two of Pizá’s new designs have already been announced. “Stinger” pays homage to Tiger Woods’ signature low, penetrating shot. The hole features an arc that rewards players who can keep their ball below 50 feet at its apex. A strong, high-trajectory draw serves as the alternate route, but the dogleg design makes that option equally challenging. At around 270 yards, the stinger shot provides a boost that allows players to reach the green in two on this short par 4.
“Cenote,” named after the natural limestone sinkholes of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, flips conventional par 3 strategy. The green sits at 245 yards and is designed for precise long-iron players. But Pizá added a cape behind the green that functions like a backboard. Players who aren’t confident with long irons can blast a 3-wood or driver 40 yards past the hole, and the terrain will funnel the ball back toward the target.
“I like to question everything,” Pizá said in an interview. “Why can’t we play a hole from back to front? If we have a par 3 that was designed specifically for great long iron players, how can we now design something for just the long player, but it’s not going to be a freebie?”
Renowned architect Gil Hanse joins the design team for Season 2, bringing a different sensibility to the hole catalog. His first contribution, “Stone & Steeple,” is a par 5 that tips out at 590 yards. The design features Sahara-type fairway bunkers similar to those Hanse used in his restoration of Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course. A rock wall marked as a penalty area guards the left side of the green, with a church steeple and graveyard serving as a visual reminder that anything too far left is “dead.”
“Starting with a relatively blank slate for TGL has been liberating,” Hanse said. “On a few of our TGL holes, we decided to honor the concepts, thoughts and styles of some of the greatest designers from golf history like A.W. Tillinghast, Alister MacKenzie, Donald Ross.”
Popular holes from Season 1 return with updates based on analytics and player feedback. “The Spear,” “Quick Draw,” “Temple,” “Pick Yer Plunder,” “Alpine,” “The Plank,” and “Flex” will all appear again, many with modifications. The Spear, for example, now features an inverted triangle on the approach shot, forcing players who laid up off the tee to choose between right and left routes to the green.
Six holes have been rebranded as official Team Holes, one for each franchise. These holes feature localized backdrops and terrain specific to each team’s home region.
TGL and Full Swing upgraded the game engine to Unity 6, leveraging the engine’s High Definition Render Pipeline to deliver more realistic and immersive virtual golf environments. The upgrade should improve lighting, shadows, and overall visual fidelity on both the massive screen at SoFi Center and for viewers at home.
The improvements extend to the data presentation as well. TGL’s partnership with ScoreSight continues to provide real-time analytics on ball speed, launch angle, and other metrics that help fans understand the strategy behind each shot.
Season 2 features 15 regular season matches spread across January, February, and early March. TGL’s Season 2 lineup brings together a star-studded collection of global golf talent, with defending champions Atlanta Drive GC leading the charge and an international roster that spans continents and playing styles. The league’s unique team format continues to attract some of the most exciting players in professional golf, creating a dynamic and unpredictable competition.
The defending champions, Atlanta Drive GC, return with a powerhouse lineup featuring Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay, two of the most consistent performers on the PGA Tour. Joined by Billy Horschel and Lucas Glover, the team brings a blend of experience and competitive fire that made them Season 1 champions. Their target? Proving that their first title was no fluke and establishing a potential TGL dynasty.
Boston Common Golf might be the most internationally diverse team, featuring global stars like Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland, Hideki Matsuyama from Japan, and Australian Adam Scott. Keegan Bradley rounds out a team that combines major championship winners with incredible shot-making abilities. McIlroy, in particular, brings immense star power and a competitive spirit that could make Boston a serious title contender.
Jupiter Links Golf Club arguably boasts the most iconic roster, headlined by the legendary Tiger Woods. Alongside Woods, Max Homa represents the new generation of charismatic American golfers, while Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner add depth and strategic versatility. The team’s lineup is a compelling mix of golf history and emerging talent, with Woods’ participation alone generating massive fan interest.
The remaining teams each bring unique strengths: Los Angeles Golf Club features a mix of young American talent, such as Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala, alongside international stars Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. New York Golf Club, last season’s runners-up, counters with a dynamic lineup including Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, and Cameron Young. The Bay Golf Club rounds out the league with an international quartet featuring Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg, Australia’s Min Woo Lee, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, and American Wyndham Clark.
With such a diverse and talented group of players, TGL’s Season 2 promises to deliver high-stakes, fast-paced golf that continues to redefine how fans experience the sport. Each team brings its own narrative, strategy, and star power, setting the stage for what could be the most competitive season yet.
The enhancements for Season 2 reflect TGL’s commitment to refining the product based on real-world data and feedback. The larger green creates more variety in putting scenarios. The updated holes add strategic depth. The technology improvements enhance the viewing experience.
But the core appeal remains unchanged. TGL offers fans a chance to watch the world’s best golfers compete in a fast-paced, team format inside a purpose-built arena. The shot clock adds pressure. The Hammer creates drama. The intimate setting at SoFi Center puts spectators feet away from players like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas.
Tickets for Season 2 matches are available now through Ticketmaster, with options ranging from greenside seats to premium suites. For those watching at home, every match airs live on ESPN networks, bringing primetime golf to audiences during the winter months when traditional golf takes a break.
Season 2 begins December 28. The rematch is set. The holes are ready. The green is bigger. Golf’s most innovative league returns.
