Austin Riley's Health Rebound: Braves Third Baseman's Spring Surge and Third-Round Value

Atlanta Braves 3B Austin Riley had a reputation as a reliable source of power stats in fantasy baseball and a durable player. He played all but eight regular season games during the 2021 to 2023 seasons and averaged 36 HR with a .878 OPS. He played 110 games in 2024 and only 102 in 2025, both seasons cut short by injury.

As a result, he averaged just 17.5 HR with a .760 OPS. The drop in production and injury risk have caused his draft capital to drop this year, but a Spring Training surge and good health could indicate a potential bounce back year for Riley.

At a glance

  • Spring 2026 stats: .379 BA, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1.196 OPS in 36PA as of March 17.
  • Projections: Steamer .260 AVG, 27 HR, 88 RBI, 79 R in 617 PA.
  • Injury risks: Two straight shortened seasons; abdominal surgery recovery is key.
  • Draft value: ADP ~61 (4th-5th round); rebound to 30+ HR makes him a steal.

Austin Riley's 2025 Injury Setbacks

Abdominal Strain Derails Season

Right after the 2025 All-Star break, Riley suffered an abdominal strain and missed two weeks' worth of games. Once he returned he had just four hits in 39 PA, indicating that he likely returned to action too soon. Riley reinjured his abdomen after diving to apply a tag at home plate. He had season-ending surgery the next day.

Even before his season was derailed Riley’s production had slipped a bit. Over 408 PA he had just 14 HR and a .764 OPS. His Strikeout Rate ticked up to 28.6% while his Walk Rate dropped to just 6%, both the worst marks of his career. He was also chasing more pitches out of the zone and there was a drop in his quality of contact. The good news is that he was still barreling up the ball, generating elite bat speed and hitting the ball as hard as ever. While his Statcast indicators were down a bit, they remained with his career norms.

Spring Training Surge and Rebound Signals

Velocity and Power Return

Riley reportedly showed up to Spring Training in good health with some added muscle and strength. Through 12 games and 36 PA, he’s batting .379/.472/.724 with a 1.196 OPS. Even more encouraging, his underlying Statcast numbers for Exit Velocity (93.4 MPH), Barrel Rate (23.8%), and Max EV (107.8) are all at or better than his career marks. He’s chasing less, striking out less and walking more. We’re dealing with a small sample here but the signs all point to a potential bounce back season.

The minimal changes in Riley’s underlying numbers despite his injury struggles over the last two seasons means that we’re not looking at a decline in his skill set.

2026 Projections and Draft Value

Third-Round Steal Potential

Steamer is projecting a .260/.323/.462 season with 79 R, 88 RBI, 27 HR, and 3 SB in 617 PA over 142 games. That seems to bake in a little injury time or extra rest. If Riley can stay healthy and play the number of games he’s done in the past, he could beat those projections and return to 30 HR with an OPS closer to .850.

Riley is currently being drafted around pick ~ 61 (4th-5th round) as the fifth third baseman off the board in NFBC drafts. That would be excellent draft value at the third base position, which is somewhat thin again in 2026. There is a notable gap following Riley and Maikel Garcia (~65), with Eugenio Suarez (~93) and Alex Bregman (~110) representing the next tier several rounds later. After that there are twenty or more picks between each of the next few third basemen. It would be wise to draft Riley a bit earlier, perhaps as early as the third round given his potential value.

Good health, a spring training surge, and batting fourth in a stacked Braves lineup create the potential for a major fantasy baseball bounce back year for Riley. There is an opportunity here for fantasy managers to get third-round value from a fourth- or fifth-round pick while avoiding the large drop off in available talent afterwards.
