Bo Bichette reportedly makes World Baseball Classic decision Mets fans will love

Recently acquired New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette was on track to play for Brazil during the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

It appears Bichette has experienced a change of heart ahead of spring training.

Bo Bichette reportedly makes huge World Baseball Classic call

According to Sportsnet, ESPN Brasil's Ubiratan Leal revealed that Bichette has informed the country's coaching staff he will not participate in this year's World Baseball Classic. The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year, $126M contract to join the Mets. That deal reportedly has opt-outs after each season.

In May 2025, Ayako Oikawa of the MLB website shared how Bichette was looking forward to representing Brazil alongside his older brother Dante.

"My grandparents have become big baseball fans because of what we do," Bichette said at the time. "I know they're excited. My goal is to go and help the team win, and hopefully bring attention to baseball in Brazil. I think that would mean a lot to everybody in my family."

What changed for Bo Bichette about World Baseball Classic?

Bichette suffered an injury to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee this past September. He ultimately returned to the Toronto Blue Jays' lineup for the World Series, and he hit a dramatic three-run homer during the club's Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mets fans likely will be delighted to learn about the Bichette-related update for reasons that go beyond his dedication to a team that missed out on the playoffs last year. Back in 2023, then-Mets closer Edwin Diaz famously suffered a right patellar tendon tear while celebrating a WBC win with Puerto Rico teammates. He subsequently didn't throw a meaningful pitch for the Mets until the 2024 season got underway.

Per Mike Puma of the New York Post, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said during a recent edition of "The Show" podcast that Bichette has looked impressive in his early days of patrolling third base. It now seems Bichette will continue that development while staying with the Mets through all of spring training.
