The Milwaukee Brewers traded longtime ace Freddy Peralta to the New York Mets, receiving two top prospects in return: No. 3 overall prospect Jett Williams (MLB’s No. 30) and No. 5 prospect Brandon Sproat, now ranked No. 6 in the Brewers’ system.

Both are expected to play key roles for Milwaukee in 2026. Williams, a former first-round pick, provides versatility across shortstop, second base, and center field, while Sproat made his MLB debut last season, posting a 4.79 ERA in four starts. Both carry promising long-term potential for the Brewers.

Letting go of Freddy Peralta was a tough pill for Milwaukee Brewers fans, but the return haul positions the team for a promising future at the top of the rotation.

Spring training is still in its early stages, but one insider notes that Sproat has already made a significant impact. His strong start could be an early sign that the Brewers found the right piece to help smooth the transition after Peralta’s departure.

Brandon Sproat showing promise for the Brewers

On Sunday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com highlighted Sproat as the Brewers’ top prospect “making some noise” during spring training, based on his performance through the first three weeks of camp.

“The Brewers remain exceptionally high on Jacob Misiorowski’s chances to develop into an impact starter, but after that spots are wide open for an array of prospect types. That includes Sproat, one of two Top 100 prospects (along with infielder Jett Williams) acquired from the Mets in the Freddy Peralta trade,” McCalvy wrote on MLB.com.

Sproat struggled in his only spring training appearance as of Monday, allowing three hits and one earned run over 1 1/3 innings. Still, Adam McCalvy has observed much more in his daily work than the box score reveals. Even without his new cutter, Sproat had the tools to slot in as a back-end starter for Milwaukee when healthy, and having six years of team control over a pitcher with that upside makes him an even more valuable asset.

“Sproat refined a new cutter over the winter and was happy with his execution in his first Spring Training start on Friday. Even if he doesn’t crack the Opening Day rotation, he is well positioned for a heavy dose of Major League starts in 2026,” McCalvy continued.
