The New York Mets start a new chapter this year after moving several superstars off their roster during the offseason. With many cornerstones of the team no longer in New York, Francisco Lindor was supposedly in line to become the official captain of the Mets. But team owner Steve Cohen announced that the role will remain vacant as long as he is in charge.
Francisco Lindor responded to the announcement, saying he has no issues regarding the decision from New York Mets owner Steve Cohen. Lindor declared that he will continue to be a leader of the team, just as he did in the past. He is glad that Cohen put the matter to rest permanently, so the players can focus on their performance on the field.
“I respect it,” Francisco Lindor told reporters on Thursday morning. “This is definitely a Steve, front-office-type decision. I respect it. At the end of the day, being named captain or not, I’m still going to act the same. This is not something that’s going to make me somebody different. So I respect it. I’m glad he put everything to bed so that way we can stop talking about this. And move on.”

Francisco Lindor is among the top performers for the Mets since joining the team ahead of the 2021 season. The 32-year-old shortstop is one of the leaders of the team on the field as well as in the clubhouse. However, he will not join Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, John Franco, and David Wright in the list of captains for the Mets franchise.
According to Francisco Lindor, the New York Mets do not need a designated captain, as they already have enough leadership in the clubhouse. He believes it does not matter at all if the entire team focuses purely on winning.

“It’s just one of those where it’s like, I’m going to focus on baseball,” the shortstop said. “I feel like we’ve got leaders [without] captains and all that stuff. The clubhouse is the clubhouse. Let’s just play baseball, and let’s focus on winning.”
At present, only two MLB organizations have an officially designated captain of the team. Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees is one of them, with Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals being the other one.
