Chicago White Sox fans had a reason to stay up late on Thursday night as infielder Curtis Mead was back in the lineup for Team Australia in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Going up against Team Czechia, he was able to showcase why he is the only MLB player on the roster, having a strong game. Let’s take a closer look at how he did in their second pool play game.
The projected third baseman for the White Sox, Mead was able to have another strong performance in the World Baseball Classic pool play. He was able to go 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI on the day. In the top of the third inning with Team Australia trailing 1-0, Mead came up to the plate with two runners on. He got this at-bat with runners in scoring position due to a costly error to extend the inning.
Mead would crush the two-strike pitch into the left-center field bleachers to give Team Australia a 3-1 lead, and they would not look back. He would also single with two outs in the eighth inning, but nothing came of that hit. That was Mead’s first home run in the World Baseball Classic, and Team Australia would hold onto the lead and win 5-1. They are now 2-0 in pool play and are in a great position to advance into the knockout portion of the WBC.
Mead is now 4 for 8 with one home run in his first two games in the World Baseball Classic. The team will now get an off day before taking on their toughest challenge yet in the reigning WBC Champion Team Japan. It will be intriguing to see if Mead is able to continue his hot swinging at the plate or if he will be neutralized by better pitching in the tournament.
