The Milwaukee Brewers are currently well on their way to crushing the Athletics in Spring Training in today’s (Tuesday) game. At the time of this writing, the Brewers are enjoying a comfortable 8-0 lead. Most of their runs have come due to the explosive bat of infield prospect Tyler Black, who had six RBI before being lifted from the game.
Black got the scoring started early with a two-run home run in the second inning. Blake Perkins had singled before him, and Black lifted the very next pitch thrown over the right field fence. In the third inning, Black laced a bases-clearing single for three more RBI. Finally, in the fifth inning, he hit an RBI double.
All told, Black was 3-3 on the day with a home run and six RBI.
There was a time, not so long ago, when Black was one of the most anticipated prospects in the Brewers farm system. In recent seasons, though, he has kind of become an afterthought as fans anticipate the arrivals of prospects like Jesus Made and Cooper Pratt.
The fact that Black started to struggle at the plate, too, caused him to fall down Milwaukee’s list of top prospects. In 23 Major League games over the past two years, he has hit just .211/.357/.263 with three RBI.
In 71 games in the minors last season (he missed time due to injury), Black hit .261/.388/.391 with five home runs, 39 RBI, and 22 stolen bases.
After he was pulled from the game on Tuesday, he talked to reporters about getting back to the basics of hitting, getting right mentally, and his goal to get back to the Majors in 2026:

“I think coming into camp more ready this year was a big thing. I got hurt early in camp last year so I think that kind of hindered me a little bit. Being able to compete, you know, my body being in a good spot and allowing me to do that has been big for sure.
“[A big RBI day] is big for the confidence for sure. Obviously, any time you have a good day at the yard it puts a smile on your face. But honestly, it’s just one day and continue to build on it.
“It’s been a real small sample [being in the Majors], but I think for me the biggest thing for me is not looking into it too much. You know, it’s tough being up and down a lot for a lot of guys, so just continuing to show up with my process, get better ever year, and you know, learn every time I get sent back down from when I’m up with the older guys.”
Black is capable of playing first base, third base, and the outfield. If he continues to have a hot bat, it will be difficult for the Brewers to keep him off the Opening Day roster, especially considering all the different positions that he can play.
