The San Francisco Giants missed out on the playoffs last year despite starting the campaign with plenty of optimism. The Giants have not made any major additions to their lineup so far, but they are looking to bolster their offense. Meanwhile, Brendan Donovan is a hot commodity on the trade market, with the St. Louis Cardinals selling away their top earners to rebuild the roster.
As per Bradford Doolittle of ESPN, the San Francisco Giants will eventually secure a trade move with the St. Louis Cardinals for Brendan Donovan. He feels the deal makes sense for both organizations. The San Francisco Giants need a second baseman with a strong profile against right-handed pitching, while the Cardinals can clear the path for their top prospect to come into the team.
“The Giants need a second baseman, and the Cardinals are trading any hitter within sniffing distance of age 30. It’s a perfect match,” Doolittle stated.
.@dgoold asked Chaim Bloom if there needs to be clarity soon on Brendan Donovan’s future with the team, and if he’s willing/able to give that clarity today.

“The San Francisco Giants are even a good team to paper over Donovan’s career platoon weakness against lefties. You pair his career .812 OPS against righties with Tyler Fitzgerald’s .841 OPS against lefties, and you’ve got a strong keystone combination. The Cardinals could then turn the position over to Thomas Saggese and clear a little runway for JJ Wetherholt’s imminent arrival.”
Saggese had a solid rookie campaign with the Cardinals last year. The infielder is expected to take another big step forward this year with more opportunities on the field. On the other hand, Weatherholt is the top prospect in the organization and fifth overall as per MLB Pipeline. He is ready to make his MLB debut after finishing last year in Triple-A with the Memphis Redbirds.
After failing to make any notable moves in the free agent market, the San Francisco Giants front office is intensifying its intentions in the trade market , as per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. He reported that the team failed in its bid to sign shortstop CJ Abrams from the Washington Nationals, despite including one of its very top prospects in the return offer.
The Giants aggressively pursued shortstop CJ Abrams but couldn’t reach a deal with the Nationals. San Francisco was open to including top prospect Josuar Gonzalez, and discussions also involved Carson Whisenhunt, Jacob Bresnahan, Bo Davidson, and Jhonny Level, per @extrabaggs pic.twitter.com/qEZZguWZlv

“With their options thinning out and just two weeks remaining before players report to spring training, the San Francisco Giants recently turned up the aggression to get something done on the trade market,” Baggarly wrote. “According to major-league sources, they signaled their openness to include highly regarded teenage shortstop prospect Josuar Gonzalez in a package for Washington Nationals infielder CJ Abrams.”
Abrams was an All-Star in 2024 and followed it up with his best MLB campaign thus far last year. He posted 3.4 bWAR over 144 games for the Nats with 19 home runs, 31 stolen bases, and a 111 OPS+. The 25-year-old has a $4.2 million salary for 2026 in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
