Alexander Volkanovski Backs Khabib Nurmagomedov’s GOAT Status Despite Shorter Career

Every sport has a Mount Rushmore debate. In MMA, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, and Georges St-Pierre are widely accepted as the greatest. The fourth spot always sparks debate. Many put Khabib Nurmagomedov there. Others push back. They question his resume and level of competition. But for Alexander Volkanovski, it is clear. Khabib belongs in that spot.

Volkanovski’s position is layered in a way that neither dismisses Khabib nor hands him the title unconditionally. The undefeated record alone does not move Volkanovski. He said plainly that he does not care about going undefeated; he cares about who you fought. That standard applied strictly would hurt Khabib’s case, given that his 29 opponents do not collectively represent the deepest resume in GOAT discussions.

Volkanovski then made the key point. It is not just who Khabib beat, it is how he beat them. The dominance was suffocating. Elite fighters looked out of place against him. That kind of performance carries weight in the GOAT debate. Even if the resume has gaps. He also compared him to Charles Oliveira.

“Khabib could’ve easily done it. You could just include Khabib because the fact he was undefeated, but I don’t care about undefeated, I care about who you fought. The way he won was really dominant. Even though he doesn’t have as good a resume as some of the others, even Charles has got as many wins as him, but Charles got losses. Khabib looked much better than his opponents,” Volkanovski said.

He believes Islam Makhachev has Khabib beat on resume at this stage. This comes from a man who has fought Makhachev twice and studied him as closely as anyone outside his own camp. So it is a meaningful endorsement of where the current lightweight champion sits historically.

Alexander Volkanovski Calls Islam Makhachev’s Fight Career Highlight Moment

Volkanovski’s relationship with that first Makhachev fight has clearly settled into something he carries with genuine pride rather than regret. He has never tried to argue otherwise or find ways to minimize what Makhachev did that night. What he has consistently done is frame the fight within its proper context. And as per him, that fight was the biggest moment of his career.

We know how good Islam is. Till this day, look what he’s doing. His resume was still good, but it wasn’t the resume he’s got now. But everyone knew he was that good.” He also added, “Even though I lost, I still think it’s probably one of the biggest moments of my career,” Volk said.

The outcome does not automatically define the significance of the moment. Volkanovski stepping up, belonging there, and pushing a generational talent in a division above his own natural weight, that story does not change based on the scorecards. He lost twice. But still probably do it again.
