Middleweight legend Chris Weidman is hoping to see a “monster name” headlining at the White House.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Saturday night, both for the UFC 326 numbered event in Las Vegas and the full reveal for another big card down the line.
After months of talk over who will compete in Washington D.C., Dana White will unveil the UFC White House lineup.
Reports have frequently placed Ilia Topuria’s unification fight with Justin Gaethje as the main event, but Weidman thinks people are expecting bigger for June 14.
Many are eager to see ‘El Matador’ return to action against ‘The Highlight’, who captured the interim lightweight gold in January. But should that clash be the White House main event over Conor McGregor or Jon Jones?
Not according to Weidman, who discussed the high expectations for the June 14 card in Washington D.C. during an appearance on The Bohnfire podcast with MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn.
The former UFC middleweight champion has no issue with Topuria vs Gaethje featuring, provided it is alongside either ‘The Notorious’ or ‘Bones’.
“If it was me, I would love to see a Jon Jones or a Conor McGregor. All the biggest names on there,” Weidman said.
“Topuria and Gaethje, yes. But just for the most eyes and visibility and making it a huge event, to have those monster names (Jones or McGregor) on there, if it’s feasible, that’s kind of what the expectation is,” he added.
Dana White shut down Jones’ White House pleas , but late updates suggested that his desired retirement fight against Alex Pereira was being discussed.
Fans won’t have to wait long until they find out if the bout came to fruition, but the reveal will be coming without one of the originally planned fights.
On Friday, it was revealed that one UFC White House fight has fallen through . The UFC president disclosed that on stream with Nina Drama, and cameras seemingly caught matchmaker Mick Maynard’s frustrated reaction to finding out from Hunter Campbell on stage at the UFC 326 ceremonial weigh-ins.
