Max Holloway convinced Joe Rogan of his greatness nine years ago.
The BMF champion is one of two fan favorites set to headline Saturday’s UFC 326 numbered event in Las Vegas.
Charles Oliveira will challenge Holloway in the main event, as the pair meet in a rematch 11 years on from a UFC Fight Night main event that ended early due to a freak injury suffered by the Brazilian.
In ‘Blessed’, Oliveira will be sharing the cage with one of the greatest featherweights of all time. But it took two wins over Jose Aldo for Joe Rogan to rank Holloway above another of his predecessors.
After Conor McGregor knocked out Aldo in 13 seconds, Rogan immediately branded the Irishman the greatest featherweight of all time.
Holloway’s first win over the Brazilian to become the undisputed champion at 145 pounds was not enough to change the UFC color commentator’s mind.
But when Holloway knocked out Aldo at UFC 218 in a bloody beatdown, Rogan changed his pick and crowned ‘Blessed’.
“When he was chicken-necking it at Aldo and he’s got his hands down and is talking s—t and stalking him, you could see it in Aldo’s face, like he was drowning,” Rogan said on his JRE MMA Show.
“You could see the waves were coming and he knew he wasn’t gonna be able to dog-paddle for too long. Like, ‘Jesus Christ, how am I gonna be able to keep up with this guy?’
“He’s the baddest motherf—-. I think he’s the best 145er ever,” he continued. “He might not agree with it yet because of the record, which I see his point, but the way he fights, the Octagon IQ that he shows, his fight IQ, his ability to find a weakness and see it, his predatory behavior inside the Octagon, I think he’s the best.”
Unfortunately for Holloway, his claim to the featherweight GOAT throne has been hampered by the rise of another all-time great since his wins over Aldo.
Two-time featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has beaten Holloway three times and established himself as the consensus number one in the division’s history.
That is the case in Rogan’s mind, as he described the Australian as featherweight’s new GOAT after he returned to the throne at Diego Lopes’ expense last April.
Having seen Volkanovski bounce back from consecutive knockout losses to regain the crown at 145 pounds, the longtime UFC color commentator now puts him above Holloway, Aldo, and McGregor.
