Joe Rogan wishes Tom Aspinall’s title defense against Ciryl Gane got to play out.

The UFC heavyweight champion returned in Abu Dhabi last October looking to make his first defense after Jon Jones’ retirement saw him elevated to undisputed status.

Instead of cementing his grip on the crown, Aspinall was poked in both eyes by Gane, leaving him unable to continue and resulting in a no contest at UFC 321.

Many liked what they saw from ‘Bon Gamin’ before the egregious fouls, Rogan included.

Rogan caught the UFC 321 main event from the United States, as he does not commentate on cards unless they are domestic numbered events.

The stand-up comedian and renowned podcast host believes Gane started strong, having found a home for his jab and ensured that the champ would struggle to lay a glove on him.

Recalling the fight during a recent episode of his Joe Rogan Experience podcast alongside Dustin Poirier, the longtime UFC color commentator mourned the fact things ended the way they did in the UFC 321 headliner.

“It’s a crime in the sport that the fight with Aspinall got stopped the way it did,” Rogan said. “It’s a crime because that fight was playing out in a very interesting direction.

“Aspinall was having a really hard time touching that guy. He was getting busted up, touched up a lot. Ciryl’s jab is legit, and how many times has he been to the second round?

“My thought was the real problem that Aspinall was going to present is in the grappling, he’s a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, big f—-, fast, and has a great (double-leg takedown),” he added.

“But when he was standing there in front of Ciryl Gane, this was the first time that he was facing a guy who was agile, quick, and very technical… Gane was doing a lot of sneaky s—.”

While the original plan was for an immediate rematch, Aspinall had to undergo double eye surgery and has yet to fully recover.

In the meantime, Gane will welcome Alex Pereira to heavyweight on June 14. The pair will compete for an interim heavyweight belt at the White House amid Aspinall’s absence.
