The Los Angeles Lakers have a long history of finding diamonds in the rough, and they may have uncovered another one in the 2025 NBA Draft. While most of the headlines this season have focused on the stars at the top of the roster, second-round pick Adou Thiero is quietly making a name for himself in the G League.

After a slow start to his professional career due to nagging injuries, Thiero is finally healthy and showing exactly why the Lakers front office was so high on him. His recent performances for the South Bay Lakers suggest that he could be a legitimate piece of the franchise’s future.

Los Angeles Lakers Rookie Adou Thiero Flashing Serious Upside

Thiero’s potential was on full display this past Friday during a matchup against the Texas Legends. In a dominant 127-105 victory for South Bay, the 19-year-old rookie put together arguably his best game as a pro.

Thiero poured in 19 points on an incredibly efficient 7-of-8 shooting from the field. He also knocked down his only three-point attempt and grabbed seven rebounds, showcasing the physical tools and motor that made him a standout prospect. What stood out most wasn’t just the scoring, but how comfortable he looked. For a player who missed significant time with a knee issue and an MCL sprain earlier in the season, seeing him move with confidence and aggression is a massive positive sign for the organization.

In his limited G League action this season, Thiero is averaging 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting nearly 63% from the field. These aren’t just empty stats; they are evidence of a player beginning to find his rhythm.

Why Thiero Matters to the Lakers’ Future

It is no secret that the main Lakers roster has flaws. The team often struggles with speed and athleticism on the wing, two areas where Thiero excels. At 6-foot-6 with a strong frame and explosive leaping ability, he fits the archetype of the modern NBA wing defender that every contender needs.

Head coach JJ Redick has been open about the team’s plan for the rookie. While Thiero has seen brief minutes with the NBA squad, Redick emphasized that the G League is currently the best place for him to get the necessary reps to develop. “We’re just going to look for opportunities to get him minutes,” Redick said recently. He acknowledged that while Thiero has had good moments, there are still times he “looks like a rookie,” which is to be expected for a teenager adapting to the pro game.

The Path to the Rotation

The performance against the Legends is a stepping stone. For Thiero to crack the Lakers’ main rotation, he needs to stack these types of performances on top of each other. Consistency is the hardest thing for a rookie to master, especially one whose season has been interrupted by rehab.

However, if he continues to dominate the G League competition with efficiency and defensive intensity, it will become harder for the coaching staff to keep him in South Bay. The Lakers need energy guys who can defend multiple positions and finish plays in transition. Adou Thiero is proving he can do all of that and more.

Fans should keep a close eye on the South Bay box scores moving forward. The Lakers might just have their next homegrown rotation player waiting in the wings.
