North Carolina Tar Heels superstar freshman Caleb Wilson has not played since February 10 against the Miami Hurricanes. He has been out since then with a fractured left hand. Wilson has been a huge part of the Tar Heels team before he got injured.
Hopefully, he can return for the NCAA Tournament. With that being said, Wilson after the college basketball season will most likely declare for the 2026 NBA Draft. This NBA Draft is very stacked with freshman talent. Wilson is one of the most talented freshmen in the country and he can very well go in the top five.
Well, is there a chance that he should go number one overall in the NBA Draft? For now, the debate is between Darryn Peterson from the Kansas Jayhawks, Cameron Boozer of the Duke Blue Devils, and A.J. Dybantsa of the BYU Cougars.
Raymond Felton played for North Carolina from 2002-2005. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. Felton was on Yahoo Sports Daily talking about who should be the number one pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
He believes that Wilson should be in serious consideration for the top overall pick. Felton said, "But to me, Caleb [Wilson] is the guy that has the biggest upside out of all of them." It is interesting that he thinks Wilson has higher upside than Peterson, Dybantsa, and Boozer.
Wilson this season with North Carolina is averaging 19.8 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2.7 APG, 1.4 BPG, and 1.5 SPG. He also has shot 57.8% from the field, 25.9% from three-point land, and 71.3% from the free throw line. Wilson is 6'10" and weighs 215 lbs. It is too early to determine who will be the top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
One of the more interesting things about the 2026 NBA Draft is that the Atlanta Hawks own the New Orleans Pelicans first-round selection. If Atlanta winds up drafting in the top five, maybe Wilson will wind up playing for his hometown team. Felton probably believes he has the highest upside because he plays for North Carolina. No matter what he thinks, Wilson will no doubt be a great NBA player whether he goes number one overall or not.
