The Knicks shut down one of their point guards already this week in Kemba Walker. Now they're going to be without another one already on the mend even longer.
Derrick Rose underwent a minor procedure Friday to address a skin infection in the area of his existing ankle injury, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports. Wojnarowski also writes that there is "optimism" that Rose's return could be in the next one to two weeks.
Rose initially was sidelined back in December when he suffered an ankle injury against the Rockets. It was believed then that he would return some time around or after the All-Star break, but as that return drew nearer, it was decided he needed the additional procedure.
His return can't come any sooner for a reeling Knicks squad, as without Walker as well they lack a true point guard. Alec Burks has played some in the role, as has Immanuel Quickley, but neither has demonstrated the value Rose has.
Over 26 games this season — including four starts — Rose is averaging 12 points, three rebounds and four assists per game on solid shooting splits. Most of his numbers are in line with those of last season, except for scoring, which has taken a slight dip as he's playing a few less minutes per night.
The Knicks currently sit at 12th in the Eastern Conference, and entered Friday three games back of the play-in picture. They were also 3-13 over the last five weeks, the worst record in the East.
