The Philadelphia 76ers need to be aggressive in the buyout market. They did not improve the roster via trade and only weakened their depth by trading away Jared McCain. Here’s a look at some buyout market options who could prove to be key rotational pieces in Philadelphia
Lonzo Ball is the exact type of player the 76ers need. He is a 6’6 point guard who can defend at a high level and control the pace of the offense. The build is perfect, but the player may not be the same. Ball has struggled mightily this season, with a majority of his stats ranking towards the bottom of the league. Philadelphia would be counting on a bounce-back stretch if they claim Ball to be the backup PG.
Chris Boucher has been linked to the 76ers for months. His relationship with head coach Nick Nurse goes back to their days with the Toronto Raptors when they won the 2019 NBA championship. Boucher would give Philadelphia another backup big man who can play the four and five. The depth is important due to frequent injuries, but getting a power forward who could potentially play next to Joel Embiid and knock down the occasional three would be massive.
Haywood Highsmith has previous ties to the 76ers organization, as he started his NBA career in Philadelphia during the process. He has gone on to become a high-end role player and gotten himself a good reputation across the league. He is likely the best non-big defender available on the buyout market and can hit threes when needed. He has been linked to the 76ers in the past few offseasons; maybe Philadelphia makes a midseason move to bolster its wing depth.
Georges Niang is an interesting case in this year’s buyout market. The former 76ers forward has been thrown around the league since leaving Philadelphia. Could he find his footing once again as a Sixer? It would be a similar case to Boucher in terms of adding a power forward who could knock down threes; Niang is not the same level of defender. This would be a move Daryl Morey makes if all other options have been exhausted.
The 76ers need to add to their roster if they want to attempt to compete. They failed to make any improvements at the trade deadline, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t options at this point in the season. Adding any of these players would give Philadelphia additional rotation depth as it looks to make a push. Embiid was essentially pleading for the front office to make a move to increase their chances for a championship. The buyout market is the last chance to do so.
