Adam Schefter reveals massive playoff advantage for Bills' Josh Allen this season

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen finds himself in an unusual position as he heads into the 2025 playoffs. For years, Allen's road to the Super Bowl has been hindered by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

That’s no longer a problem. Mahomes tore his ACL in Week 15, and the Chiefs are out of the playoff race for the first time since 2014. The Cincinnati Bengals are also out of the running after suffering a 24-0 shutout loss to Baltimore, so Joe Burrow will not be waiting in the wings, either.

Josh Allen faces different competition and circumstances in playoffs this year

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted, this means that there is both an opportunity and a challenge for Allen. The Bills quarterback will now be lining up against young quarterbacks rather than seasoned champions, but the journey won’t be smooth for him.

The Bills are currently 10-4, second behind the New England Patriots by just one game in the AFC East. So far, Allen has dedicated his career to running into Mahomes in the playoffs. Kansas City knocked Buffalo out in the AFC Championship Game in the 2020 season, the divisional round in the 2021 season, again in the divisional round in the 2023 season and again in the AFC Championship Game in 2024. These have been the defining moments of Allen’s postseason career.

"Patrick Mahomes is not going to be in the postseason this year. His nemesis is out. We don't know if Lamar Jackson is going to be there, but Joe Burrow is not going to be there," Schefter said. "So when we talk about the great quarterbacks in the game, most, if not all, of them are not even going to be in the postseason."

Buffalo is left behind by New England in the standings with three games to go. This is important since Buffalo would probably have to win three away games in the playoffs to get to the Super Bowl. This has never happened to Allen before.

"This is a year in which Josh Allen has the easiest test but the hardest test," Schefter said. "The easiest test is because all the great quarterbacks, like Mahomes, that blocked his path to the Super Bowl are not gonna be in the playoffs and still trying to make it now. But, on the other hand, he’s gonna have to win three on the road to get to the Super Bowl."

Schefter commented on the return of Allen to MVP discussions.

"The men who blocked him are gone. Now he's got to go do it on the road," he said. "That's where we're at today with Josh Allen, who suddenly is square back in the MVP conversation."

Up next for the Bills is a game on the road against Cleveland this coming Sunday, and then they finish out the season against the Eagles and Jets.
