Chiefs Receive Unfortunate Update on 1,000-Yard RB Before NFL Free Agency

The Kansas City Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 after finishing the season 6-11. While the roster had several weak spots, running back was one of the most glaring holes.

Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco were the leading rushers. However, they combined for just 1,073 yards and nine touchdowns on 281 carries. Kansas City attempted to upgrade the position during the season.

ESPN's Nate Taylor reported that the Chiefs offered a 2026 fourth-round pick for New York Jets running back Breece Hall, but a deal was never made before the trade deadline. With the offseason now underway, he is set to hit free agency on March 11 with an expiring contract.

They're once again expected to be interested in Hall, with USA Today's Nick Brinkerhoff listing them as a potential landing spot for the running back.

The former second-round pick out of Iowa State would be a significant upgrade. Last season, Hall accumulated 1,065 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He also hauled in 36 receptions for 350 yards and one touchdown.

However, as free agency approaches, signs are pointing toward the Jets blocking him from hitting the open market. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported that New York is likely to use a franchise or transition tag on Hall.

“If the Jets do tag him — which remains the expectation — they would then have the ability to trade him for draft capital,” Rosenblatt wrote. “If Hall doesn’t want to be a Jet, or if the Jets don’t want him long-term, that would be a much better outcome than losing him for nothing.”

Either tag option would mean Hall remains with the Jets for one more year on a fully guaranteed contract. While a transition tag still allows the running back to negotiate with other teams, the Jets would have the ability to match any offer sheet to retain Hall.

While the chances of Hall outright hitting free agency continue to decrease, it leaves the Chiefs likely needing to search elsewhere to revamp their running back room.
