Quarterback Justin Fields isn't an ideal option for the Kansas City Chiefs, but he's surely a better choice than free agent Russell Wilson.
On Monday, the Chiefs dealt a 2027 sixth-round pick to the New York Jets for Fields, who will now serve as backup to starting QB Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes' availability for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season remains uncertain as he's still rehabbing from a torn ACL in his left knee, which he suffered in December 2025.
The trade came after pundits suggested Kansas City consider signing Super Bowl XLVIII champion Wilson, but that would've been an act of desperation.
In his top 100 free agents list, Fox Sports NFL writer Greg Auman predicted the Chiefs would sign Wilson (ranked No. 79 on his list).

"Go back to 2024, he had 16 [touchdown passes] and five interceptions while going 6-5 for the Steelers, and that's the hope for the team that brings him in as a stopgap," wrote Auman.
Chad Johnson, a former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver, discussed why Wilson — who turns 38 on Nov. 29 — would be a good fit in Kansas City on a Sunday episode of the "Nightcap" podcast.
"Offensively, [Chiefs offensive coordinator] Eric Bieniemy and [Chiefs head coach] Andy Reid will put Russell Wilson in a position to be able to have success," Johnson said. "I think they have enough offensively where he can come in and right that ship and keep that team afloat with wins until Patrick Mahomes is ready to come back, if he's not ready to come back before the season starts."
The Chiefs offense, however, could tank with Wilson at the helm. The former Seattle Seahawks star had a 17-27 regular-season record as a starter over his past four seasons with the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
He went 0-3 in three starts with the Giants last season, throwing the same number of TD passes and interceptions (three) during that span. New York benched him in favor of 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart ahead of Week 4.
Fields, meanwhile, wasn't much better in 2025. He went 2-7 in nine starts for the Jets, posting a subpar 38.7 QBR and tossing seven TD passes and one interception. He was benched for Tyrod Taylor ahead of Week 12.
But Fields, 27, offers way more upside than Wilson. An offensive wizard in Reid can maximize whatever is left in the 2021 first-round pick. He can't salvage Wilson, who should begin exploring a post-playing career at this point.
