Shortly after second-year New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye endured a nightmare outing in his club's 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, he revealed that he received a pain-killing injection for his injured right throwing shoulder.
Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Maye spoke with reporters on Tuesday morning and said he doesn't expect to need surgery to repair the shoulder issue. As shared by Nicole Menner of NBC 10 WJAR, Maye also seemed to confirm he suffered the injury during New England's AFC Championship Game win over the Denver Broncos on Jan. 25.
Maye previously suggested the soreness was related to arm fatigue.
"I think it's a case of having the one hit in the AFC Championship Game," Maye said on Tuesday about his shoulder. "That was just kind of unfortunate."
Maye was responsible for three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions) in the Super Bowl defeat that featured the Patriots scoring zero points across the contest's first three quarters. Some understandably have wondered if his poor play was related to his shoulder, but he declined to blame the injury for his performance.
"Things happen like this all the time in the league," Maye explained. "I was blessed this year. What a year of health and blessings for me this year. ...I was feeling like I was able to make throws in the game, and was myself."
Much has been said about written about how Maye will bounce back from experiencing such a letdown on football's biggest stage. On Tuesday, he indicated he's excited to get back to work and deliver for those who cheered the Patriots on throughout what became an exciting season for everybody involved.
"We just have 10 weeks until we're back here," Maye said, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. "That doesn't sound too far away. It turns around quickly on you. So, I'm looking forward to it. I appreciate the fans for your support. I know I didn't play as well as what I like down the stretch, and I promise to do my best, work hard, get us back to those moments and those games. Can't wait to be back in Gillette (Stadium). Looking forward to next year."
It sounds like Maye is ready to tackle this next challenge head-on as he prepares for the third pro season of his young career.
