Even before the New York Giants officially fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, observers speculated that quarterback Jameis Winston would leapfrog Russell Wilson on the depth chart after rookie Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion in the club's 24-20 loss at the Chicago Bears this past Sunday.
It appears fans who never want to see Wilson take another meaningful snap for the Giants will get their wish.
On Wednesday morning, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported that Winston will start for the 2-8 Giants against the Green Bay Packers (5-3-1) this Sunday if Dart is unable to play. Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk noted that Winston "likely" will get the nod for the Packers matchup since Dart remains in the concussion protocol.
The previously mentioned Daboll publicly named Wilson the Giants' QB1 on the same night the club drafted Dart. Daboll then never gave Winston a legitimate chance to win the starting job during the summer, but the Giants ultimately benched Wilson after he lost his first three starts in September.
At Chicago's Soldier Field, Wilson replaced the injured Dart and was unable to prevent the club from squandering a 10-point fourth-quarter lead. Against the Bears, Wilson completed 3-of-7 passes for 45 yards. He also took two sacks. Meanwhile, Winston has yet to make his regular-season debut with the Giants.
A recent report revealed that the Giants didn't part ways with general manager Joe Schoen on Monday because "the feeling from ownership and key decision-makers is that the talent (on the roster) is significantly better than the Giants' 2-8 record indicates." Fair or not, this latest Winston-Wilson decision suggests some people within the Giants feel Winston could have won at least one of the club's first three games.
While with the Cleveland Browns last season, Winston tossed 13 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions over 12 games and seven starts. If nothing else, he should offer Giants fans some needed entertaining moments amid what's become yet another lost season for the organization.
