Back in October, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni suggested that he wasn't worried his club could endure a collapse similar to the one that dashed the Super Bowl hopes of the 2023 Eagles.
Philadelphia won four straight games after those initial comments, but the Eagles have since lost three straight games to fall to 8-5. As Michael Silver of The Athletic shared in an article published on Thursday, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recently touched upon whether or not he is worried that the events of the 2023 season are repeating themselves ahead of Christmas.
"Nothing like it," Lurie said about comparing the two seasons. "Absolute opposite. We have a Super Bowl defense and great special teams. Our offense will get it going. I’m not worried at all."
Regardless of Lurie's comments, the similarities between the two seasons are noticeable. The 2023 Eagles went from 10-1 to 11-6 and then suffered a blowout loss in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Subsequent reports claimed that the relationship between Sirianni and starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was somewhere between "still a work in progress" and "fractured" during the campaign.
Throughout this fall, wide receiver A.J. Brown has routinely generated headlines by voicing his frustrations regarding his role and the overall play of the Philadelphia offense. Earlier this week, some called for Sirianni to bench Hurts after the signal-caller tossed four interceptions and lost a fumble in the Eagles' 22-19 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 8.
Despite their struggles, the Eagles will enter this weekend holding a lead over the 6-6-1 Dallas Cowboys in the battle for the NFC East division title. This coming Sunday, Philadelphia will host a 2-11 Las Vegas Raiders team that could be on the verge of a franchise reset this winter. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Eagles as 11.5-point favorites for that game.
"Nah — this ain’t no crash at the end," Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham added. "It’s just the way it’s going right now. We’ll get it right. I’m not worried at all. ...This isn’t 2023. We’re definitely gonna get it right. I just know that how we handle this right now is key. Let people talk. While they keep talking, we’ll just keep working."
