Jerry Jones, Cowboys Cut Defensive Tackle Before NFL Free Agency

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys continue to make adjustments to their roster before the start of 2026 NFL free agency. On Wednesday, the Cowboys restructured the contracts of quarterback Dak Prescott , left guard Tyler Smith and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb . Dallas announced that defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was waived from the team on Thursday.

Winfrey is a former fourth-round pick, drafted No. 108 by the Cleveland Browns. The defensive tackle started his collegiate career in community college, spending two seasons with Iowa Western. After 2019, Winfrey entered the transfer portal, choosing the Oklahoma Sooners. He spent two years with Oklahoma, making the 2nd-team All-Big 12 both seasons.

Winfrey saw his most action in his rookie season, appearing in 13 games and producing 22 total tackles, including eight solo tackles, along with 0.5 sacks. That offseason, after being investigated for an incident involving threatening to pull a gun on a woman, the Browns released the defensive tackle.

Winfrey's career has not been the same since the incident, only appearing in two NFL games since. In 2023, he played one game for the New York Jets and spent 2024 in the UFL, playing for the Birmingham Stallions.

In 2025, Winfrey was able to make his way back to the NFL after being signed by the Cowboys. This was an impressive feat, as the former Sooners standout was the only UFL player that season to be signed to an NFL roster and make the 53-man cut. On December 21st, in a 34-17 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, Winfrey appeared in his only game of the year, getting two tackles.
