General managers, executives and other members of the NFL community have spent much of this week coming up with theories for how the Baltimore Ravens quickly went from possibly acquiring Las Vegas Raiders defensive star Maxx Crosby to signing former Cincinnati Bengals pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson to a four-year, $112M contract that includes $60M in fully guaranteed money and could be worth up to $120M.
During a Thursday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," future Hall of Famer and current NFL analyst J.J. Watt seemed to make his feelings quite clear regarding the biggest football-related story of March.
"I obviously have been following the Crosby situation, which is wild," Watt explained. "I mean, pretty unbelievable coincidences that Trey Hendrickson happened to be available in the coming hours immediately after [the trade] fell through. Incredible there. Just perfect luck for that situation."
At least one NFL executive thinks the Ravens basically viewed a trade for Crosby "as insurance" in the event that Hendrickson signed with a different team. The market for Hendrickson's services seemingly didn't develop as his camp had predicted before Baltimore agreed to send two first-round draft picks to the Raiders for Crosby, but the Ravens were able to scrap that trade before it became official at the start of the new league year on Wednesday.
The Raiders are now reportedly telling interested teams that Crosby "won’t be traded," and he indicated via a social-media post that he's happy to stay with the team that drafted him in 2019. The Raiders have Crosby under contract via the three-year, $106.5M extension he signed last offseason.
"He seems excited about the possibility of going back and rejoining the Raiders," Watt added about Crosby. "So looking forward to seeing that. I would imagine we'll find out in the next couple weeks here if the team feels the same way, if the market has cooled off and there's nobody offering the same things. But whatever he wants, I'm looking forward to seeing."
Crosby reportedly failed his physical with the Ravens for reasons related to the meniscus repair he needed earlier this winter. He may not be cleared for football-related activities until "June or early July," so it's now believed to be unlikely that any other team will match the Raiders' asking price for the 28-year-old anytime soon.
