Part of the New York Giants hiring John Harbaugh as their next head coach involved a structure change within the organization, as Harbaugh will report directly to team co-owner John Mara and not to general manager Joe Schoen.
During his introductory Giants news conference on Tuesday, Harbaugh insisted that aspect of his deal had been "overblown." Later in the day, Schoen discussed losing power to the Giants' new main man.
"I'm not worried about that," Schoen said, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN. "I've been in the league for 26 years, so everywhere I've been, the head coach and general manager work together. That's the only way it's going to work. Get on the same page, go through the process. We've done it everywhere I've been, so I'm not worried about it. That's just something on a piece of paper that doesn't matter."
Some have assumed that Harbaugh's arrival essentially signals the beginning of the end of Schoen's time with the Giants. It appears that may not be the case. Per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Schoen "has not signed a contract extension — his deal runs through 2026 — but is expected to after the draft in April."
A lot can happen to alter a working relationship over a period of three months or so. For what it's worth, Giants senior player personnel executive Chris Mara referred to Harbaugh as "the most important cog in the wheel" while speaking about who will have what amount of say regarding personnel decisions.
"We need to work together, and we're going to come to the final conclusion, and it's always going to be about what's best for the New York Giants," Schoen continued during his comments about Harbaugh. "I have no problem with that, and I'm looking forward to working with him."
NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY noted that Schoen revealed he and Harbaugh "text all the time, always about football, and his phone especially starts buzzing during the playoffs, when both men are watching the same games." For now, it seems Schoen would do well to simply agree with whatever Harbaugh has to say during those interactions.
