New OC Brian Daboll tried to convince Titans to make this Cam Ward decision

Long before the Tennessee Titans hired Brian Daboll as their new offensive coordinator this winter, he was serving as the head coach of a New York Giants team that was in need of a quarterback and that held the third overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft.

During a Wednesday appearance on NFL Network, Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi shared how Daboll tried to convince Tennessee to not take signal-caller Cam Ward with the top overall choice of last year's player-selection process.

"Brian actually tried to convince me not to take [Ward] last year, and I still joke with him about that," Borgonzi explained, per Bobby Kownack of the NFL's website. "...I was coming back from getting a coffee, and he sits me down at the wall, and he's like trying to tell me to take somebody else. He's talking up this player. Nah, didn't work Dabes."

It was first revealed last spring that Giants general manager Joe Schoen reached out to Borgonzi in a last attempt to grab the No. 1 pick as the Titans went on the draft clock.

"I had to do it," Schoen told Borgonzi. "All right, man. Well, good luck to you, man. I was gonna wait and just call you now on the clock, so I figured you guys were picking. But thought I’d give it one more swing."

The Titans seem just fine with their decision to make Ward the draft's first pick, while the Giants selected pass-rusher Abdul Carter at No. 3 before they traded back into the first round to grab quarterback Jaxson Dart at choice No. 25. As for Daboll, he recently admitted that a "big factor" in his decision to join the Titans was the fact that they have Ward atop the depth chart. 

Mike Borgonzi shares injury update on Cam Ward

Ward picked up what has been referred to as an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder during Tennessee's Week 18 game this past January. On Wednesday, Borgonzi hinted that he's pleased with how the 23-year-old is recovering. 

"He's trending well," Borgonzi said about Ward. "He's tracking well for the offseason."
