Packers rookie receiver Matthew Golden continues to deal with a shoulder injury that knocked him out of last week’s game versus the Panthers. After listing as a limited participant in Thursday practice, he logged a DNP yesterday and apparently on Saturday as well. Before today’s session, coach Matt LaFleur shed some light on Golden’s status. LaFleur clarified that Golden hasn’t suffered a “setback,” but what he did have to say was discouraging nonetheless.
Friday, LaFleur said, was not a “rest day” for Golden. It could be a precaution, but it sounds like he just wasn’t fit to play.
“No, I mean it’s just one of those deals where he’s fighting to play and we’ll see how he’s feeling today, whether or not he goes out there and practices. But yeah, it’s just that he’s got to be able to handle everything that we’re throwing at him. … No setback, this is totally day by day.”
So, there’s that at least – no setback. Still, it does not seem like Golden is trending in the right direction. Team reporter Rob Demovksy reported earlier Saturday afternoon that Golden was on track to miss a second straight practice despite taking the field for stretches.
“WR Matthew Golden (shoulder) went through stretch like yesterday but did not have a helmet or go outside for the start of practice. Looks like he will be a DNP again,” Demovsky tweeted.
This disappointing news comes amid additional uncertainty at receiver, with Savion Williams (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) dealing with issues of their own. Per Demovsky, Williams did not appear to be taking part in today’s practice, either.
LaFleur remains hopeful the team will have Wicks back for Monday: “Hopefully. I think he had a decent day yesterday, or a good day yesterday, although he was limited. So we’ll see how he’s feeling out there today and then make a decision.”
