Earlier in the week, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said that he feels second-year quarterback Drake Maye and franchise legend Tom Brady have a similar "passion for football."
Meanwhile, current Patriots cornerback Carlton Davis III earned a Super Bowl ring while playing with Brady as a member of the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For a piece published on Friday, Matt Vautour of MassLive shared Davis' take on how Maye is like the seven-time Super Bowl champion signal-caller.
"Drake Maye is that guy," Davis said. "He’s a competitor. He’s so natural. You can just feel it on him. He’s just being himself. He’s trying to be the best version of himself. Tom was obviously the greatest quarterback, but you can tell that Drake wants to take a lane of his own and create his own legacy."
Interestingly, Maye acknowledged this past fall that he was focused on "trying to be myself" instead of "the greatest of all time." In the process, he became a regular-season Most Valuable Player Award finalist who finished just five points behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in voting.
"When he first came to Tampa, he immediately brought the belief that we could do it," Davis recalled about Brady signing with the Bucs in March 2020.
Maye now has members of the Patriots believing they can earn an upset win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX. As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to have New England as a 4.5-point underdog against Seattle.
While Davis only joined the Patriots last offseason, Brady famously guided the franchise to six Super Bowl championships from 2000 through the 2019 campaign.
"To be able to come to his old stomping grounds, a place that has so much history and so many legendary moments through the years," Davis added about Brady. "To be able to bring them back to where they once were in the glory days has been amazing for me. I’m just thankful and grateful for it all."
Davis could now be part of the early days of the Patriots' next dynastic run.
