Patriots open to reuniting with Stefon Diggs instead of adding Eagles' A.J. Brown?

The New England Patriots had a need for a big-name wide receiver such as A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles even before New England parted ways with veteran receiver Stefon Diggs this offseason.

However, the Eagles reportedly want at least a first-round draft pick and a second-round choice in return for Brown. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf suggested he could reach out to Diggs at some point this spring.

Is door open for Patriots, Stefon Diggs reunion?

"I wouldn’t say the door’s closed," Wolf said about possibly re-signing Diggs, per Mark Daniels of MassLive. "I mean, again, we’re gonna look through every way we possibly can to help improve the team."

Diggs led the 2025 Patriots with 85 receptions, 102 targets and 1,013 receiving yards. Over 17 regular-season games, he recorded four touchdown catches.

That said, Diggs turned 32 years old this past fall. He also has a pretrial hearing scheduled for April 1 related to charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery stemming from an alleged December incident. It's unknown if the NFL could eventually suspend him regarding that matter.

"I think it’s important to add good players to the team," Wolf explained. "You know, we were going through this the other day. The whole idea of a No. 1 receiver, like how many of them are there in the NFL? Maybe half the teams have one. So, you know, I don’t know if that’s a prerequisite for being a good football team. In my experience, it hasn’t been. I think as long as you have a lot of good players and diverse skill sets like we have, then that stuff kind of takes care of itself."

Do Patriots have a deadline in mind for possible A.J. Brown trade?

Multiple Eagles and national reporters have noted that the club could wait until June 1 to trade Brown for reasons related to the salary cap. According to Karen Guregian of MassLive, Wolf indicated he isn't in a rush to finalize a deal for the 28-year-old.

"I think the only real deadlines you have are salary-cap related," Wolf said. "For instance, did we spend money in free agency that would take us out of something else? But I wouldn’t say there’s a deadline on trying to improve the team."

In short, rumors linking Brown with the Patriots may not quiet down anytime soon.
