Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers went a perfect five-for-five on his field goal attempts to set a Super Bowl record and help his club notch a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8.
For a piece produced by The Athletic's Jayson Jenks and Rustin Dodd that was published on Friday, Myers acknowledged that he had some butterflies in his stomach before he stepped out onto the Levi's Stadium field for the biggest game of his life. However, Myers was anxious in a way many would not expect.
"Dude," Myers told punter Michael Dickson inside the Seahawks' locker room ahead of Super Bowl LX. "I feel kind of nervous because I feel so calm right now."
"Dude, I was literally just thinking that two minutes ago," Dickson responded. "I didn’t want to say anything, so I’m glad you did."
As Michael Baca noted for the NFL's website, Myers became the first player ever to make five field goals in a single Super Bowl and to score 200 points in one season, including the playoffs. Nevertheless, he was "robbed" of being named the Most Valuable Player for Super Bowl LX when Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III won the award.
In total, Walker rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries against the Patriots. He also contributed 26 receiving yards on two catches. According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Walker became the first running back to win Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis achieved the feat for Super Bowl XXXII back in January 1998.
According to Jenks and Dodd, one way Myers got his mind off of kicking in Super Bowl LX was by "turning on the Golf Channel as he talked to his family." While casual sports fans may never confuse Myers for Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, future Super-Bowl-kickers may want to follow in Myers' footsteps and enjoy the relaxing sounds of what occurs on a golf course ahead of playing on football's biggest stage.
