Tony Gonzalez knows a little bit about playing the tight end position at a Hall of Fame level and then making the transition into a successful media career.
The current Amazon Prime Video NFL personality recently spoke with Kristen Wong of Sports Illustrated about the uncertain future of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. During that chat, Gonzalez indicated that people within the football community already know what Kelce will do whenever he rides off into the sunset of retirement.
"I don’t think there’s any assumption there," Gonzalez said about Kelce embracing a career in media. "He’s doing it. … I mean, come on, he’s destined for that."
While Gonzalez acknowledged he believes Kelce hasn't made a final decision about whether or not to continue playing, it's hardly a stretch to say that the 36-year-old has already proved he will be successful as a media star. Travis and his brother, Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce, host a wildly popular podcast. Additionally, Travis has shown he is quite comfortable working under the bright lights of television studios and movie environments.
Earlier in January, a report suggested that Travis Kelce "wants to do games" as an analyst. Jason Kelce began working as part of ESPN’s NFL coverage in 2024.
"The conversations I’ve had with him, we’re very similar in that vein," Gonzalez added about Travis Kelce. "Just ‘cause [of] his personality and his charisma and his experience. You saw him do 'Saturday Night Live.' The world is his oyster. Whether he wants to be in a booth, to be on the desk, to act, he can podcast. The sky is the limit with options for him to go out there and pursue his dreams. So I think it’s going to come down to what he feels most comfortable with and what’s calling him. His brother does a great job, and Travis is going to do a fantastic job. I have no doubt."
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt wants Travis Kelce to continue playing, and Kelce recently teased that he could feature under returning offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy this coming fall. If Kelce chooses to retire before he and entertainment superstar Taylor Swift get married later this year, he seemingly won't be out of work for long unless he wants to spend a year away from the game.
