After missing the entire 2024 NFL season due to an injury, the 2025 season was expected to be the year for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy to take charge and demonstrate why he was selected in the first round.

The Vikings had just finished a successful 14-3 season in 2024 with Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback. However, they decided to let Darnold leave to join the Seattle Seahawks, choosing to invest in McCarthy instead.

McCarthy's performance fell short of expectations. He played in only 10 games, throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while completing 57.6% of his passes. As a result, the Vikings’ record declined to 9-8 for the season.

Rumors have emerged regarding the possibility of the Vikings seeking a new quarterback. According to Bleacher Report, a strategic move would involve the Vikings negotiating a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. This trade would send McCarthy to Arizona in exchange for Kyler Murray, who would join the Vikings in Minnesota.

"This would represent the other end of the trade between the Arizona Cardinals and the Vikings," Moe Moton wrote. "Kyler Murray lands in Minnesota, where he can build a rapport with two-time All-Pro Justin Jefferson. The two could become a high-level tandem that consistently puts up big numbers through the air."

Murray had an impressive start to his career, earning two Pro Bowl selections. He has passed for 20,460 yards, thrown 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions. Additionally, he has rushed for 3,193 yards and scored 32 rushing touchdowns. His outstanding performance early in his career led to a five-year contract extension worth $230.5 million, which runs through 2028.

Moton stated that head coach Kevin O'Connell has called plays for top-nine scoring offenses in two of his four seasons in Minnesota. He believes that Murray could achieve peak production playing alongside one of the league's top receivers.

The Vikings are $40.2 million over the salary-cap threshold. Therefore, they would likely prefer that the Cardinals release Murray. Moton believes that if Minnesota pursues a trade, it can restructure contracts, including the quarterback's deal, and cut veterans like Javon Hargrave, Ryan Kelly and Aaron Jones to create the necessary salary cap space for him.

The immediate impact of this speculation is uncertainty and urgency within the Vikings’ quarterback room. After moving on from Darnold following a 14–3 season, Minnesota expected McCarthy to stabilize the position long-term. Instead, a 9–8 finish and inconsistent quarterback play have reopened the conversation, with analysts now questioning whether the Vikings can afford to wait on McCarthy’s development.

From a football standpoint, adding Murray would signal a clear pivot toward maximizing the team’s current offensive window. Pairing Murray with Jefferson would instantly create one of the league’s most dangerous quarterback–receiver duos, especially under O’Connell. Murray’s dual-threat ability could also relieve pressure on the run game and help compensate for protection issues that surfaced late in the season.

Looking ahead, Minnesota’s financial reality looms large. Whether this scenario remains theoretical or becomes a real offseason pursuit, the Vikings’ quarterback decision will shape their trajectory heading into the 2026 season and determine whether they prioritize patience or a win-now reset.
