The New England Patriots became the top positive surprise of the 2025 NFL campaign, as they won 14 of 17 regular-season games before they completed a trip to Super Bowl LX under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel.
However, New England's journey ended with a disappointing 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on football's biggest stage this past Sunday. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Vrabel was asked what he told his players before sending them into the start of their offseasons.
"I just talked about a disappointing finish to a phenomenal, exciting, enjoyable year," Vrabel responded, per the Patriots' website. "It's unfortunate. Talked to them about the foundation I think that we've built. Much like a home, you build a home and then run out of things to do, so you continue to add on to it, you finish the basement, you make additions to it, and we'll try to do that to this football team. I like the foundation of it, and we'll try to improve on it."
One-time NFL MVP quarterback Boomer Esiason and Hall of Famer Kurt Warner are among the notable members of the football community who previously expressed their belief that the future is bright for the Vrabel-led Patriots. In his first year on the job, he and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels helped second-year quarterback Drake Maye become the runner-up for the 2025 regular-season Most Valuable Player Award. The perception is that top-tier players seeking a new football home this offseason will now view New England as a desirable landing spot.
Esiason and Warner both think Maye can learn from his nightmare Super Bowl outing. On Tuesday, Vrabel was asked what others in the locker room can take from coming up short at Levi's Stadium on Feb. 8.
"How hard it is to win a championship," Vrabel said. "How hard it is to finish the season, to be at your best in the biggest and brightest moments. But you have to start over. This whole thing starts over in 10 weeks. The offseason program starts in 10 weeks. That's how I look at this, and when I said that to them, they kind of looked at me like I was crazy. But that's the reality of it."
As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Patriots tied for fourth among the betting favorites at +1300 odds to win Super Bowl LXI in February 2027. Vrabel is unquestionably a big reason analysts and other outsiders believe the Patriots will remain a championship contender through at least next winter.
