As Josh Alper shared for Pro Football Talk, Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio said in his end-of-season news conference on Wednesday that he expects offensive coordinator Nick Caley will remain in that role through the offseason.
Caserio wasn't quite as forthcoming while speaking about the long-term future of quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Per Houston's SportsTalk 790, Caserio neither confirmed nor denied that he will pick up the fifth-year option for 2027 attached to Stroud's rookie contract. Caserio also wouldn't say if he could look to sign Stroud to a multiyear extension this offseason.
"Really good season, done a lot of good things for this organization," Caserio said about Stroud, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. "C.J. played good football this year."
Caserio also acknowledged that "ball security" was a problem for the Texans during their postseason run. Stroud lost two fumbles and threw an interception in Houston's 30-6 wild-card playoff win at the Pittsburgh Steelers. He then tossed four first-half interceptions in the Texans' 28-16 divisional-round loss to the New England Patriots.
Caserio mentioned that Stroud missing time due to a concussion this past fall was "hard" for the 24-year-old. Caserio also pointed out that Stroud has been "a damn good quarterback" across the first three years of his pro career.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans previously voiced his support for Stroud, and there's no indication that Caserio will look to move on from the 2023 first-round draft pick before the 2026 player-selection process gets underway.
However, the perception now exists that Stroud will be entering a make-or-break season regarding his Houston future this coming September unless he inks an extension beforehand. Picking up Stroud's option would allow Caserio and Co. to punt a major decision about the club's quarterback situation to next year. That seems to be the wisest decision for a franchise that failed to receive even average play from the sport's most important position in the biggest two games of its season.
