Flames injury news: Jonathan Huberdeau placed on injury reserve list

As the Calgary Flames inch towards their return to play following the 2026 Winter Olympics, they’ve made another roster move. On Saturday afternoon, the club placed forward Jonathan Huberdeau on the injury reserve list, where he’ll likely remain for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

The 32-year-old Huberdeau is slated to undergo hip resurfacing surgery in March to alleviate symptoms he’s been dealing with for the majority of the season, as announced by the Flames back on Feb. 5 (and originally reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman). The left shot winger had a heck of a 2024-25 season, emerging as a really effective two-way player for the Flames and carving out a spot for himself in the team’s penalty-killing mix. But this season, likely at least in part due to his hip issues, Huberdeau hasn’t been nearly as effective.

Huberdeau joined the Flames back in July 2022 as part of the trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. (The Flames also received MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a conditional 2025 first-round pick they used to select Cullen Potter.) Huberdeau signed an eight year contract with a $10.5 million cap hit upon the trade to Calgary, the richest deal in franchise history.

Huberdeau’s final season in Florida saw him set a single-season record for assists by a left winger, with 85 helpers (and 115 points) in 2021-22. In four seasons with the Flames, he’s posted 194 points in 295 games. His best offensive season with the Flames was last season, 2024-25, when he posted 62 points in 81 games. The 2025-26 campaign is the third season of Huberdeau’s mega-deal; he’s under contract for five more seasons, through the 2030-31 season and his 38th birthday. He’s posted 25 points in 50 games this season.

Huberdeau joins Jake Bean and Sam Honzek on the injury reserve list, with each member of that trio having undergone surgeries that are expected to keep them on the shelf through the end of the regular season. With Huberdeau’s IR assignment, the Flames have 22 players on their active roster: two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards.

The Flames are set to return to action following the Olympic break on Thursday night when they visit the San Jose Sharks.
