The Toronto Maple Leafs are once again right in the middle of trade chatter, and this time the spotlight is on their crease. With the season swinging between hope and frustration, Toronto appears open to shaking things up if the right opportunity comes along.
According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz has been mentioned in trade talks. That might come as a surprise to some, especially since Toronto recently extended his contract. Still, it has been a tough season for Stolarz, and the consistent injuries have not worked in his favor.
Stolarz dealt with a lengthy injury earlier in the year and only recently returned to action. However, he has not yet been able to replicate last year’s performances.
Speaking on 32 Thoughts. Friedman admitted he was surprised Toronto might already be considering a move, especially since Stolarz signed a $15 million extension just in September 2025.
“Stolarz, to me, is an interesting one. This is a guy who just extended a few months ago,” Friedman said. “I’m curious about the fact that they are already looking to trade him. If they’re worried about him physically, that’s one thing, but a year ago, him and Woll were the second-best goalies in the league.”
The numbers tell part of the story. In 16 games this season, Stolarz has posted a 3.55 goals-against average and an .882 save percentage. That is a big drop from last season, when he was excellent with a 2.14 GAA and a .926 save percentage over 34 games. Naturally, those struggles have raised questions about his long-term role.
Another factor is the rise of Dennis Hildeby. Called up from the AHL after injury to Stolarz, Hildeby delivered steady performances, recording a 2.84 GAA and a .912 save percentage in 19 games.
Recently, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving hinted that, given the team’s current struggles, the team could become sellers. However, three straight wins may change that outlook. For now, nothing is set in stone. But with injuries, inconsistent performances, and new options emerging, it is clear the Maple Leafs are keeping their options open.
