The Ottawa Senators have gone 8–3–4 since losing Brady Tkachuk to a hand injury in mid-October. With the team getting ready for a lengthy road trip starting next week, their captain is now one step closer to returning.
Tkachuk was back on the ice Friday, joining teammates at an optional practice for the first time since his surgery. He worked through passing and shooting drills, showing improved wrist strength.
Head coach Travis Green addressed Tkachuk’s progress following practice, issuing a promising update on the forward's return timeline.
"He's skating today with the group, so he's coming along," Green said. "Still probably a couple of weeks away, though, at least. I don't have an exact day, but he'll get checked out this week and join us on the road trip."

Tkachuk has missed 15 games after undergoing surgery on Oct. 16. The injury occurred when Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi cross-checked him into the boards.
On Wednesday, Tkachuk discussed his recovery on the debut episode of the “Wingmen” podcast with his brother, Matthew.
“I’m in the dog days of being injured right now,” Tkachuk said. “It sucks. On Thursday, I’m going to be four weeks post-surgery. Luckily, with this surgery, I was able to skate six days after. So I’ve been going probably three times, four times a week, over the last three weeks.”
Green confirmed Tkachuk would travel with the Senators for their upcoming seven-game trip, which starts Thursday in Anaheim.
Despite his absence, Ottawa is averaging 3.56 goals per game since his injury and has stayed competitive in the Atlantic Division, currently sitting second due to tie breaks but in a three-way tie atop the division with 22 points.
The Senators will host the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
