When Tottenham Hotspur appointed Igor Tudor as the interim head coach after sacking Thomas Frank, one of the few positives many supporters pointed to was the potential working relationship between him and Randal Kolo Muani.
Randal Kolo Muani signed for Paris Saint-Germain in a €90 million deal in 2023 but struggled to live up to his billing in the French capital and was sent out on loan to Juventus. The centre-forward spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus, where he netted 10 goals and bagged three assists on top of that in 22 appearances, including eight goals in 16 league appearances to help his team clinch a Champions League berth.
So far, the move to Tottenham hasn’t worked out for the France international. He has scored just four goals in 28 matches in all competitions, managing to break his Premier League duck only last weekend. Kolo Muani scored the first-half equaliser against Arsenal at home, a low, hard drive past goalkeeper David Raya. Tottenham fans thought he had scored again to make it 2-2 for the hosts, only for the referee to disallow the goal for a slight nudge on Gabriel.
Dominic Solanke has been in good goalscoring form since returning from injury in January, but was named on the bench for Igor Tudor’s first game in charge of Tottenham after struggling with a sore throat. Kolo Muani started in place of Solanke and scored, but his goal eventually turned out to be a consolation for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful.
It was the 2022 World Cup finalist’s first Premier League goal, repaying the faith shown in him by Tudor. Having worked together at Juventus, the centre-forward has the Croatian’s trust. In an interview with Football London, Tudor also lauded the 27-year-old’s overall performance against Arsenal.
When he was asked whether Kolo Muani can score the goals required to get the North London club out of trouble. To which, the interim Tottenham boss responded:
“Yeah, I believe, yes,” said Tudor. “I really hope he continues to score.”
Under Tudor, Kolo Muani could enjoy a new lease of life at White Hart Lane. The versatile forward could be in line for a revival in the final few months of the season. He has grabbed three goals and two assists from seven Champions League outings, demonstrating that he’s got the ability. But with now just a few crucial months left for the season, it is just a case of transferring that goalscoring form to the Premier League.
Tudor chose to use Kolo Muani as a No.9 against the Gunners, with Xavi Simons and Conor Gallagher operating as the inside No.10s. Spurs fans will hope Kolo Muani flourishes in the Croatian tactician’s system and provide the goals the team has been desperately looking for.
Coming after Sunday’s dispiriting 4-1 North London derby defeat in which Tudor’s tactics were heavily criticised, the 47-year-old will be expected to do his homework meticulously ahead of facing Fulham at Craven Cottage.
