In midweek, Liverpool successfully clinched a significant Champions League victory against Marseille.
It has not been a problem for the Reds to avoid defeat since they suffered that heavy 4-1 loss to PSV in this competition last year.
But while Liverpool have managed to stay out of trouble, their performances haven’t done much to excite supporters. Recent matches against Burnley and Fulham have left fans feeling frustrated and uninspired.
Things looked different against Marseille, though, with Arne Slot switching up his approach. It paid off immediately, giving Liverpool the lift they needed.
Dominik Szoboszlai got the opener just before half-time with a well-taken free-kick.
Early in the second half, Marseille tried to turn up the heat on Liverpool’s defence, but the backline held strong. Joe Gomez stepped up well after Ibrahima Konate was sidelined, looking sharp throughout.
It wasn’t just Gomez who impressed in France, with Liverpool fans also quick to highlight the efforts of Milos Kerkez.
Despite a slow start at Anfield, the Hungarian player has shown significant improvement recently, earning praise from Gary Neville after the goalless draw against Arsenal earlier this month.
Neville said: “Kerkez, who I’ve been critical of during this season for his way in which he settled into the Liverpool team, I thought he really stuck at it and was competitive and really sort of getting at Saka and sort of really aggressive in his defending, lower and a bit more fierce. So I thought he did well too.”
He followed up that display with another solid outing against Marseille, and fans were quick to show their appreciation for the full-back.
“Kerkez been our best player this last month so been incredible tonight as well,” one supporter wrote.
“Game by game and little by little, Kerkez is starting to look like the Kerkez we saw at Bournemouth. Won’t be long until he starts contributing with more assists too,” predicted another.
A third fan commented: “Kerkez has been superb again. Really starting to find his feet.”
A fourth published: “Kerkez is so good now man,” while a fifth Liverpool fan added: “Kerkez playing like the Bournemouth player we saw.”
“Kerkez has been so much better defensively lately,” stated another Red.
And a sixth said: “Wasn’t so sure about Kerkez at the start of the season but week on week he’s getting better and better.”
Kerkez’s return to top form was a highlight, meaning that almost all of Liverpool’s summer acquisitions have begun to truly shine in the past two months.
