The plans for Manchester United redeveloping Old Trafford appear to becoming more of a reality as time passes on.
This would say goodbye to what we know Old Trafford to currently be. The current site has been witness to the Sir Alex Ferguson era, the most successful period in the club’s history.
However, the post-Fergie era has seen decline both on and off the pitch. They have failed to win a league title since the Scot’s departure, with only a couple of second place finishes.
Old Trafford has also seen a decline, with rats pictured in the stands along with leaking water.
Since the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, talk of plans to develop Old Trafford have intensified and they have set out plans to rebuild the historic arena and make it the “Wembley of the North”.
According to the Daily Mail, United have been in talks with the FA about hosting the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup final at the new Old Trafford instead of Wembley Stadium.
There is significant effort from United to make sure that their new stadium, which is predicted to be built by 2030, beats Wembley to have the rights to host the final in 10 years time.
Andy Burnham, the current Mayor of Greater Manchester has revealed the ‘Growth Plan’ for the region. In these plans, it includes a stadium with a capacity of 100,000 along with 15,000 new homes as he aims to make Greater Manchester a ‘second city to rival any other planet by 2050’.
Hosting the Women’s World Cup final would represent a great opportunity for the club. With the popularity of Women’s football growing year on year, the possibilities are endless for its growth in ten years time when the tournament would take place.
The English national team has had a very successful past few years, with back-to-back European Championship winners medals and a World Cup final appearance sandwiched in between.
The opportunity for United to not only host the tournament’s final but do so with their national team celebrating a win, would be the perfect start to life at the new stadium.
