Tottenham fans were on cloud nine nine months ago when they watched their team win the Europa League final against all odds. It was a memorable day for everyone associated with the club, as they ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy. Many believed that historic triumph would prove to be a turning point in the North London club’s history, helping them close the gap on their rivals and compete at the top end of the Premier League table this season.
However, it is fair to say that none of that has materialised in the nine months since that unforgettable night in Bilbao. The Lewis family have shown little intent in the way they have handled the football club. They made sweeping changes at the top by sacking Daniel Levy and appointing Vinai Venkatesham as the new CEO. However, the decision to remove Levy appears to have backfired, with the Lilywhites failing to secure several of their key transfer targets in recent months.
Spurs have won just two of their last 18 league matches, and there is a genuine possibility that they could be relegated in the coming months. Few would have predicted such a scenario at the start of the season. However, it highlights that Daniel Levy understood how to manage affairs at N17, something that cannot be said about the Lewis family based on their handling of the club since his departure.
Back in December, the Lewis family announced they would support Thomas Frank in the winter window by signing players capable of turning the club’s fortunes around in the second half of the season. Reports also suggested that the ENIC shareholders had granted Frank a £150m “war chest” for January, allowing the Danish tactician to invest heavily in strengthening the squad. However, those promises ultimately proved hollow, as the club failed to provide meaningful backing in the transfer market.
Simon Jordan has now criticised the Lewis family and urged the club to part ways with the ENIC shareholders following their disappointing tenure at N17. Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said,
“What you’re seeing now is what Tottenham Hotspur really is, by the way. It is the real ownership. This is the real ownership. This is what Daniel Levy’s been blamed for and what Levy’s taken the consequence for. The real ownership of Tottenham is the Lewis family. If you want to change the culture of the football club, change the ownership because the real ownership is Lewis and his gang.”
The pundit added,
“Spurs are in a relegation battle and the fact that they bought nobody in January tells you where their ambition is. There is a clear indication they needed some support and personnel in the dressing room, and they got nobody. It tells you what the ownership model is and what it isn’t.”
Simon Jordan claims that fans had previously blamed Daniel Levy for the Lewis family’s shortcomings. Now that the Englishman has left N17, Spurs supporters are witnessing the limitations of ENIC’s majority shareholders. He also pointed out that the Lilywhites are currently in a relegation battle, yet the ownership group has done little to address the situation in the transfer market, raising serious questions about their priorities. As a result, he has called for the North London club to reconsider its ownership model in the coming months.
The sooner the Lewis family step away from North London, the better it may be for Tottenham. Their leadership has failed to unlock the club’s full potential, leaving the Lilywhites stranded in the bottom half of the Premier League table and at risk of dropping into the Championship if results do not improve in the coming months.
